Toy Run 2011 - 27 November 2011
Hi All,
It’s that time of the year again where we as bikers get to take part in a very special event, the Toy Run. I will be managing the tickets and the communications between the club and the Toy Run organisers, so if you require some additional info, not listed below, please let me know.
The Toy Run
Started in 1982, in both Cape Town and Jhb by the Italian Motorcycle Owners Club,
this event has grown into the largest motorcycling-charity related event and
very possibly the world!! The Cape Town leg of the event has over the years
achieved something of an iconic status, making it a very special ride for all and by all i mean all odd 15000 bikes!
What is the Aim?
The Toy Run aims to distribute toys and gift to less privileged children (under
the age of 18) of all races in orphanages, shelters, homes and hospitals. Added
to this it also aims to improve the image of motorcyclists
The Toys
The Toy Run’s
insignia is a teddy bear, as such a lot of soft toys are brought along for the
children. However, this is not the only type of toy permitted, any toys for (no
toy gun or related items will be distributed) older children are welcome and in need, examples are balls,
rackets, etc.
Remember that to come along on the Toy Run, you need to bring a toy along!!
Logistical Details and Feedback:
This year, the Toy Run will start from a new location, the Ysterplaat Air force
Base and will end in Maynardville. At the end of the post, you will find links to
all the relevant information as well.
We will be leaving the venue at 10h30!
Now, this year a new challenge has been thrown at the organising committee, new legislation that has been passed has put a cap on the number of bikers allowed into the end venue and whilst this number is not available to us currently, pending the response from the Cape Town Fire Chief, it will be less than last year. The number I have floating around is 60, but this can change, so don't take my word for it as yet.
Having said
this, I would like everyone who will be joining us to please do two things for
me.
1. Reply to this thread indicating if you will be joining
2. Send an email to john@sat.co.za with the
subject line “Toy Run 2011” and include your pillion’s name (if coming along)
and your name and bike type.
Once I have more information, I will pass it along both on the forum and in email to those who sent me the mail.

Woohoo! Sandy and I will be there!
Hi John,
I'm so sorry I'm going to miss this event as I (and several others) will be away on the Club GS Crayfish Weekend.
Sadly, I could only ever participate once before - in the 1983 Toy Run.
Best wishes to all those who will do the run this year.
I will be there with one of my 4 Ladies
Wayne

Hi All,
Currently we are sitting at 28 bikes attending this years Toy Run!
I will be posting the updated list tomorrow for everyone.
Hoping to get further clarity from the event numbers tomorrow, so expect another update!
Thanks all for the great response!!
Cheers
John
Hi All,
I spoke yesterday with Ian regarding the final arrangements for the event. To date, they have not had any feedback for City of Cape Town regarding the total amount of bikes allowed into the venue still. Ian has however assured me that the event will carry on, period.
I will be at the venue on the 26th to locate or spot, so please check your emails saturday night for any last minute information. Our banners will be flying, so locating us should be possible between the hordes.
I have updated the list with all those attending.
John
Hi John

Hi,
I will be there...
Jacqui
Chris & Rinette will be there, on Zebra-Blue!
HI All,
Welcome back from the weekend, along with News24, IOL and facebook (don't forget the like the club on facebook!), the BMW forum is and should be your next stop!
So back to business...the Toy Run.
The list has grown again (awesome!!) and looks like the BMW boys and ladies will be in full in full strength!
As we are drawing closer to the time, ticket arragements questions are coming up so here the low down.
[Curious Biker] John, I will be taking part in the toy run, where can I can the tickets?
[John] Tickets will be solid for $100 per ticket...Just joking!! No, seriously, Saturday the 26th I will going to the Maynardville to verify the BMW spot and make sure that final arrangements are in order. My suggestion is as follows. That Saturday, we can pick a central spot in the Southern Suburbs where eveyone can make a turn to collect there tickets, then later, I will move to the Northern Suburbs and finally to Boland area. For those members who did not get there tickets, we can look at having the remainder at the starting point available for you. But this is the current idea. Any feedback?
[Curious Biker] So John, do we have any idea of the final number for tickets we will have available to us?
[John] Good question, last week I spoke to Ian Tichart from IMOC and at that point, we still didnt have an official number as yet. I will again be chatting to Ian this week to get an update and info will be feed back into the forum. But the official word to date that I have, is CCT has not confirmed as yet.
Have a great week and ride safe out there!
This is John signing off from a wet Stellenbosch
[This Toy Run update was made possible by the BMW Forum powered and maintained by our local Rocket Scientist - Charles]
I'll be there (with pillion)

Gerald Stark
Is it possible to get your cell number John!!
Hi Dave,
Mail sent.

John
Please add myself and my 6 year old daughter. This will be her 1st toy run (she is over the moon). But I needa small helmet for her. Is there anyone in the club that can lend me a helmet for her? My wife's helmet is too large, and I have been unable to find one small enought for her. I promise to return it in the same condition.
BIIGGGG PLEASE.
Thanks
Leon Jordaan (aka SilverFox)
John may I suggest that we collect the stickers from you at Maynardville during the course of Saturday morning?
WIll you be able to get the stickers to HAMMAN in Bellvile
Can we collect them there ...Maynardville is always a problem for collection and it will mean someone needs to stand outside the gate.
Wayne Haylett
Willi plus toys NO pillion!
My son on his bike will join as well.
Hi All,
this years Toy Run has been plagued by new "rules" they need to abide by and now more recently a change in starting venues.
The Ysterplaat start has has been changed to Cape Town Market at Epping (formerly Epping Market).
This is due to the Traffic Dept not wanting the mass bike ride to go via the M5 with all the construction work in progress there.
So again please note, the starting location has changed and an official Media Release will be given once everything is official.
On a side note, Hats of to the organisers of the event! Stressfull times!!
Ciao
John
