===Forum Etiquette===
Below are a few guidelines for use of forums. Some definitions you may need:
* Post: Any message posted to the forum
* Subject: The title of a post
* Thread: A string of posts, all replies, or replies of replies, to an original post
* Topic: The subject of the original post that starts a thread - i.e. what the thread is about
===Be nice===
* No 'flaming' - in other words, avoid personal attacks, pettiness, abuse. Respect other users, and if you disagree with them, explain why.
* No 'trolling' - trolls are posts deliberately designed to provoke an angry response. That doesn't mean you can't be controversial, if you really mean it.
* No personal disputes - if it gets personal, take it offline.
* Don't be patronising or sarcastic. It comes across about ten times worse online.
* Avoid typing in ALL CAPS, which is considered shouting or yelling.
* Learn to let go - don't keep harping on about the same thing, or harking back to previous arguments. It is rarely productive to do so, and you always end up going round in circles.
* If someone else's post offends you, don't immediately fight back online. Consider whether they really meant to cause offence. It can be easy to sound rude without meaning to, especially if English is not your native language. However, if you really are troubled by the post, don't respond - take it to your lecturer instead.
===Be effective===
* Post in the most appropriate forum (and only in one forum).
* Stay on topic - try to focus on the original topic. In particular, don't change subject in the middle of an existing thread - just start a new topic.
* Conversely, don't start a new topic if your post relates to an existing one - reply to the existing thread instead. Make sure you reply to the appropriate post, not just the last post in the thread
* When starting a new topic, make the subject line clear and informative. It makes the topic easy to find.
* Make sure you're understood, even by non-native English speakers. Try to write full sentences, and avoid text-message abbreviations or slang.
* If asking a question, provide as much information as possible, what you've already considered, where you've already read etc.
* Read what's already there before posting. You may be repeating what others have already said or asked.

Thanks Lobola - very appropriate and apt.
Shaded - 'Moodle' is a content management system designed specifically for online learning, with lessons, classmates and online tests. I used it as part of the Shuttleworth initiative to teach linux skills in SA, and it is really powerful.

Great post, thanks .It was very informative to be reminded of forum etiquette. I think your post should be compulsory reading for all members ,to be read at least once a month . My only criticism of your post, with respect, is that as it is such important reading , if you would have had a clearer heading in the subject line i.e "Forum Etiquette" instead of " something we could all do well to be reminded of " it would probably have more reads, and be easier to find in the future. I certainly would like to refer back to it again in case I am tempted to do some trolling and flaming ( hehe sounds like something my bike does )...oops there i go changing the subject again .....SORRREEE :)

1 to change the lightbulb, and to post that it has been changed.
14 to share similar experiences at changing light bulbs, and how said lightbulb could have been changed differently.
7 to caution about all the possible dangers of changing lightbulbs.
6 to argue over whether it is a "lightbulb" or a "light bulb”, and another 6 to condemn those 6 as being stupid.
2 industry pros to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp".
16 know it alls who claim they are in industry, and that light bulb is perfectly correct.
19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs, and to please take this discussion to a light bulb forum.
11 to defend the posting to this forum, saying that we all use light bulbs ,therefore the post is indeed relevant to this forum.
36 to debate which method of changing lightbulbs is superior, where to buy these bulbs, what brand works best for this technique, and what brands are faulty.
5 people to post pics of their own light bulbs.
15 people to post "I can't see their !@#^%$ light bulbs".
7 people to post URL's where one can see examples of lightbulbs.
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly, and then post the corrections.
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety, including all headers and signatures, and add "Me Too".
5 posts to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the lightbulb controversy.
4 to say " didn't we go through this a short time ago?"'
13 to say " do a search on lightbulbs before posting a question on lightbulbs.
1 to bring politics into the discussion, by adding that the current president is not the brightest bulb.
4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.
1 moderator to lock the light bulb thread.
1 forum lurker to post to the original thread 6 whole months from now ,and start it all over again.
And... One guy to cross-post the list from one forum onto another (that would be me )

I know what a Moodle Forum is - I just wanted a posting to be made in response for those that don't necessarily.
Also - as per Rynet's comments - would it be possible to page this under a Forum Ettiquette header for access / ease of search etc at a later date?

(that and, I finished my exams yesterday and um, had one too many schnappses... and I am paying the price for that today!!)
