The English are coming - GS overnight ride to Boegoeberg 9 - 10 June
The English are coming and as most of you know, I am English. So when my national rugby team is about to give the Springboks another hiding, I prefer to watch it where I can be found afterwards by only those Springbok supporters I choose to take with me
.
So put your rugby jersey, be it white or green, in the panniers and come and join us as we are planning an overnight ride to the “Engelsman se Berge” near Clanwilliam for the weekend of 9 to 10 June 2012, which also just happens to be the date of the first rugby test between these two old adversaries. We have made special arrangements so we are able to watch the match at the farm and the routes will only be finalized once the start time has been announced.
Warren and Natalie Ellwood will be your hosts for this weekend trip to what has been voted one of the top 10 campsites in South Africa for the last six years and this off road ride should suit riders of all levels. English rugby supporters would have got preference from me but my wife is a true and proud South African so no go unfortunately.
Our destination is the farm Boegoeberg belonging to Sybrie De Beer who has spent a lot of time, effort and money making this destination one of the best, if not the best in the Cape. The entire campsite, swimming pool, ablutions, bar, lapa and kitchen are made from sandstone which is mined right there on the farm. The atmosphere is fantastic there and the food, prepared in a real old “boere kombuis” is always brilliant.
It is the start of winter and I think time to spoil ourselves a little after a multitude or self catering trips, therefore we will be treated to a full spit braai and all the trimmings on Saturday night and a full farm breakfast on Sunday morning. Sybrie also operates an honesty bar in the main lapa, which can be totally enclosed against bad weather and is kitted out with two very large fireplaces which warm the entire place up when needed. We can also get to within 9km of Boegoeberg on tar if the weather should be too nasty for the gravel travel we plan.
Besides some awesome riding, you will also get to meet Jasper, a fox terrier with three legs, an amazing story and a lot of guts and if we are really lucky, we may even be treated to what’s known as “die hoender dans”.
Accommodation options include the following:
- Camping in your own tent in a fantastic campsite around the dam with some of the best ablution facilities around.
- 2 x Caravans that have 1 x double bed and 2 single beds (all together obviously)
- There are beds / rooms available in houses around the campsite as follows:
Ouma se Huis – 2 x double bed (room 1 and 2), 2 x ¾ beds (room 3) and 1 x single beds (room 4)
Ou Huis – 1 x double bed (room 1) and 2 x single beds (room 2)
Houses have their own bathrooms, kitchens and everything you might need.
Housing and caravan options on a first come first serve basis.
The ride will also be accompanied by a backup vehicle towing the club trailer for peace of mind and to carry your goodies if need be.
Costs:
Any one of the house options – R360.00 per person which includes accommodation, dinner, breakfast and a contribution towards the backup vehicle.
Caravan – R320.00 per person which includes accommodation, dinner, breakfast and a contribution towards the backup vehicle.
