Winter snap of cold is now, brekky run can be done again another time.
We feel that Tulbach Childrens Home is maybe a better call than a hearty good breakfast with friends.
Please join us on the Blanket run and bring some of your warmth to some people less privileged than you and I.
blankies, will travel
Well well well, 11 bikes with three pillions and three cars loaded with donations braved the chill wet weather.
was it worth it?
It is always worth it when doing something for children.
Once we had offloaded the kit we all moved to the hall and were greeted by the kids- all 150 of them (used to be 500).
The head mistress gave a welcome talk, explaining how these kids, from2 to 18 all come from dysfunctional families and have suffered abuse of varying degrees.
Anyway, we were by now thawed out and back to full humour.
We then started the usual bike rides.
It was a privilege to be there.
To see the absolute joy a bike ride brings to young kids.
About six of the bikes took the kids, 2 or three at a time for rides around the home grounds.
They queued in orderly fashion and the more lively managed to get many rides.
either that or there were identical triplets.
Even a few of the adult supervisors enjoyed a ride on the bikes.
We had arrived at 10H30 and left at 12H30, stopping at the Kuier Bossie in town to warm up around the fire and have coffee and brunch.
Then back into rain suites and home.
The rain had accompanied us from Atlantic to Hermon, with heavy lowering clouds threateningly near the rest of the way.
Return journey was the same in reverse.
Braving the rain made this all the more special and impressive to the kids and their adult supervisors.
It really made an impact that a group of motorcyclists would come out in such shitty weather.
Such a simple thing to do and it brought so much joy to those kids.
traffic was nevertheless pretty constant despite the rain
we kept up a good pace around 120km/h
the cold rain soon made fingers ice cold
too wet for cell phone or remotes..
agree more Andy. It was agreat day out on the bike in spite of the "low hanging clouds".
Good to meet some new riders as well.
A big thank you to all at Atlantic Motorrad for organising the trip.
Till next time.
also enjoyed the ride, even though we got home wet and cold.
It was worth it, and seeing the kids enjoy the short rides was priceless.
We often forget how fortunate we are with all the "stuff" we have in life.
Till next time...
Atlantic Motorrad Blanket Run to Steinthal Children’s Home.
By Charmaine Noy.
On Sunday the 15th of July, a group of motorcyclists braved the rain and freezing conditions on a blanket run to Steinthal Children’s Home in Tulbagh. Organised by Atlantic Motorrad in Cape Town, the route took us through the beautiful areas of Wellington, Hermon, Gouda and Nuwekloof Pass.
Steinthal is situated on an estate about 5 kilometres outside of the town at the foot of the Witzenberg mountain range, and is currently caring for 150 socially disadvantaged children ranging in ages from 3 to 18. There was huge excitement when the motorcycles arrived and after we had all gathered in the school hall for an introduction and a chance to say hello, the children were treated to a ride on the bikes. It was fantastic to see them have so much fun, even one of the staff members hesitantly hopped on. which caused a good deal of laughter.
Although it was heartbreaking to hear the circumstances under which these children had come to the home, it was equally heartening to see the love and care they receive from the staff.
A huge thank you to all involved and for the generous donations received. We handed over blankets, beanies, scarves, non-perishable foods, toys and school stationery.
